Buying a tent
Finding the right tent for you involves a trade-off between time, space and money. Think carefully about the kind of camping you want to do, then calculate how much time you want to spend packing and pitching, how much space you will need for you and your people, and how much money you are prepared to spend. Car boot sales and eBay sell lots of tents that people spent a fortune on and then realised they weren’t camping people. So if you haven’t camped before, don’t break the bank. Here is Math’s account of browsing for tents that includes some recent recommendations.

Cath
- If you are planning two weeks in the South of France, then pitching time and weight is not an issue, as you will only be setting camp once a year and you will be parked right next to it.
- If you intend hiking up mountains and camping in snow, then you need a different guide to this one.
- If your intentions stretch to weekends here and there, a couple of longer family holidays and festivals then you will want the lightest, easiest-to-pitch tent that can accomodate you and your companions/brood.
